Ghana Startup Series: A Conversation with the Founder of Sankofa

We sat down with Jamie, founder of Sankofa to learn how they're thinking about snacking experiences in a new, culturally relevant way:

Tell us a bit about your brand mission and vision - what motivated you to start your brand?

Our brand mission is to create evolved traditional African snacking experiences that inspire and drive what we call Cultural Revivolution™ [Cultural Revival + Evolution]. Our vision is to be the most innovative and culturally relevant snack brand from Africa.

What's your personal selfcare or beauty routine?
I like to be in water. Whether it’s the shower, the pool or the ocean. It’s tonic for my body and soul.

Any funny stories to share from your early startup days?
One that comes to mind now is from our first month. We took a break during a rough production session that lead into the early hours of the morning. I just remember myself and our production manager Faisal sitting outside, thinking ‘what the F%$k  did we get ourselves into’… but its been more than worth it so far…we still get those moments though. We just laugh it off.
What's one thing people might not know about you?
I love to cook!
What's next for Sankofa?
Working to solidify our backend so we can scale up and drive entry into new markets. We’ve also got some innovation in the pipeline. Last, but very far from least we are working to support and drive our core brand pillar of Cultural Revivolution™
What specific advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Know your ‘why’ and have a strong ‘why’. I believe your willing/will power is only as strong as your ‘why’. Second piece of advice is to have faith and trust the process.
